Some images were drawn using a sumi brush and others were drawn with a digital brush. These elements represent the fresh shoot of the present moment.īelow is a mini-gallery of some of my art. It is my hope that these bring to mind the sense of delight when you look through a window and catch a glimpse of something in nature, whether it is a branch of a tree, a cloud, a small sprout, or a carefully balanced pile of rocks. I have added little nature elements to some of my images. Everything has come together as it is, and it is this, just this. Whatever it is, the whole universe or our life now, it is a balance of parts. The word refers to a hand-drawn circle, which is created by one stroke. The circle can be either open or closed, with both styles representing different things (discussed below). The word Enso is Japanese, meaning circle. It’s typically created with one uninterrupted stroke of the brush, although sometimes it can be painted with two strokes. This is, in a way, similar to the meaning of Sengai’s drawing. The Enso symbol is considered a sacred symbol in the Zen school of thought.
I have titled some of my Zen triangles, Just This. What does the Zen triangle represent? There are many interpretations of what a whole containing three parts might represent. You might wonder if there is a difference: it usually depends on the intent of the artist.
#Enso zen circle meaning free
It’s something that is thought to be made when the mind is liberated from constraint, and free to create what it wants to. Some Zen triangles are drawn with a single stroke and some contain three separate lines. Enso, is a circle that is usually made in one simple brush stroke. It is thought that Sengai drew the circle, triangle, and square together to represent the universe. One of the best-known instances of a Zen triangle is in a famous painting, Circle, Triangle, Square, by the Japanese Zen monk Sengai Gibon (1750–1837). Have you seen Zen triangles? They are very much like Zen Circles in that they are drawn as a contemplative, mindful expression.
